Fully Utilize Your Corner Cabinets

Having good cabinets is essential in the kitchen to not only keep our plates, bowls and other implements organized but also provide easy access to dry goods or other items frequently used during cooking. The more cabinet space you have, the less clutter you’ll have in your kitchen itself because you’ll have space to store your kitchen gadgets out of site yet close at hand.

Corner cabinets can pose a bit of a problem, however. While these cabinets can provide the most interior space, much of this space isn’t easy to access because of the narrow opening that a corner cabinet provides. Fortunately there are a few ways to address this problem so you can make better use of all of your cabinet space without having to contort yourself in the process.

Install a Lazy Susan System

One of the most popular ways to make use of a corner cabinet is to install a multi-tiered lazy susan inside the cabinet. You’ve likely seen these as they have maintained significant popularity over the years because of how useful they are. The assembly is made up of two or three large platforms connected by a central spindle around which the platforms can easily rotate. You place items on the platforms, turn it and continue to fill it all the way around. When you need something you simply turn the platform until the item becomes available.

Many of these systems use two platforms, one at the bottom of the cabinet and one near the center of the cabinet’s height. Occasionally, you may see three platforms or even a different configuration. What to keep in mind is, the more platforms you add, while there is more storage on the platform, the amount of vertical space is greatly reduced with each addition.

Pull-Out Shelving

Another option that is growing in popularity is pull-out shelving. These are shelves that pull either straight out or rotate out from within the cabinet on tracks letting you gain full access to the shelf’s contents and then allows you to slide it back in when you’re done. Some might even feature complex hinges or tracks to maximize your shelf space. Typically these are solutions for a single shelf that attaches to the door while others get pulled along behind it.

Regardless of the specific configuration of your shelves, the idea here is to bring the shelf to you rather than you having to reach all the way into the cabinet to try and access the items in the back. This makes utilizing the entire space within your corner cabinet much more convenient.

Revitalizing Your Cabinets

There are other ways to make use of corner cabinet space including replacing your current cabinets with new ones that have an angled interior for easier access or even a set of L-shaped drawers to make better use of the available space. You could even consider eliminating the corner cabinets altogether to add a floor to ceiling corner pantry instead. Depending on the layout of your kitchen, you may have other options as well.
